i did this interview with lou some time ago, and recently, i finally got the chance to spend time with him in person.

here's a photo i shot of him one day in the park during his seattle-visit:

it's interesting to see how i have grown, yet also stayed the same.

here's the interview (from some time in late 2008):

how did you get into photography?

I don't specifically remember when photography 'clicked' for me.
Although, it was around the time I entered high school, or a little
before. My mom handed her Canon A1 35mm camera down to me around that
time, it was the same camera she bought right before I was born, and
took photos of me with while i was growing up, so it was sort of perfect that I
ended up getting so much use out of it as well. I still love that camera,
it's one of my favorites to shoot with, but I think it's sadly on it's
last hurrah.

what led you to pursue photography as a profession?

A month after I graduated high school in Olympia, WA, I moved to
Seattle, and knew that I wanted to pursue photography as a career. It
has been a passion for a long time, and I think it's important to have
a career in something you love, or at least strive for it. Life is
short, and it should be lived well. I feel that I can give a lot
through photography specifically, and am never more satisfied than
when i get 'the shot'. I attended Seattle Central's Commercial Photography
Program in order to get the skills I desired. I felt like I already
had a vision of sorts, but the lighting courses I took really
opened my eyes to a whole new world of how I could create
and portray things. Learning about light and the many ways it works
is such a magical thing.

I make only a small portion of my income from it at this point, but
hope to make a full living from it eventually. My passion is so strong
for photography that I feel like it will some day happen for me as
long as I keep working hard at it. I can't see myself doing anything
else.

what effect do you think living in seattle has had on your work?

Living in Seattle has had a large influence on my work. I have met
amazing, interesting people here that I have featured in my portraits;
along with many business-contacts. I think that moving to a city of
some sort is key to building an art-based career. Who you know
actually is important much of the time if you want to make money from
art... and you can usually find those sort of clients while living in
a city. But, most of all, I am just so thankful for the people I have
become close to in Seattle. I don't know what I would do without their
inspiration, support, and them letting me snap a million photos of
them over the past few years.

who are some of your influences?

Guy Bourdin, Stephen Shore, Reed+Rader, Stephen Meisel, and you, of course.

what, if anything, are you trying to accomplish with your photos?

I have always wanted to 'make a difference' through photography, as
cheesy as that sounds... but that is the simple, honest truth. I want
to travel and document things that are controversial, things that most
people have never seen. That would be ultimately fulfilling to me.

As of right now, I am working hard at my fashion photography and
building a portfolio in that direction, and I love adding a slight
sense of humor and obscurity to these photographs whenever possible.

do you find photography to be cathartic?

I think that it is in some way. I seem to usually try to portray
things that would make others 'feel' something, and that is important
to me and a bit like therapy when I feel that I have gotten my point
across visually. But, I suppose every photographer strives for that,
right? I think that if I reached my goal of being able to travel and
document important things and events that I cared about, it would be
very cathartic and rewarding for me at that point.

what is it that attracts you to photography, as opposed to some other artistic medium?

I have never been very talented at other mediums of art such as
painting or drawing, so I think that's why I was drawn to photography
as a way to express myself. I love the idea of being able to capture
moments, and having the ability to hold those moments in time forever.

I also think that photography is much more of a socially-based art
than others, especially when portraiture is the type of photography
that you do most. It's allowed me to meet others and learn quite a lot
about someone through simply taking their photograph.

what kind of places would you like to travel to?

The places that are at the top of my list right now are India, Spain,
Greece, Japan, and I would especially love to do documentary work in
Africa.

has your family been supportive of your choice to be a professional
artist, as opposed to an accountant or lawyer? (my grandpa always
wanted me to be an accountant. said people would always need
accountants.)

My family has always been amazingly supportive over my choice to
pursue photography. My mom always wanted to be a photographer, but
never actually pursued it, so she loves to see me striving to make it
happen.

and here's the million-dollar question: film or digital? and does it matter?

You know, I really do love both. These days I've been using digital as
my main format, because it's cheaper than having to develop film
constantly, but it does take more time editing in the computer to get
the contrast/colors you desire... and truthfully, I'd rather be out
shooting than spending hours in front of my computer screen, which is
definitely the downfall of digital. Digital is definitely the way to
go when you are photographing events, because then you know that you
definitely got 'the shot' that you were wanting.

Although, I will always think that there is a special quality with
film that cannot be touched with digital. When you get a good
shot on film, it's always ten times more rewarding than when you
get a good shot with digital.

tonight someone asked me to list 20 of my favorite and most influential music artists in under 15 minutes. i think this was the most truthful and thoughtful list i could give, because these musicians were the ones that came to my mind first in this short period of time, for whatever reason. some of the ones i listed even surprised me. we always get caught up in why we like certain artists, and why. but really, it doesn't matter. we listen to each musician for different reasons, and they all matter. we should all stop picking apart music intentionally, and just listen... because the way you feel and think about it can be two very different things... and you should always go with the way you feel about music when you are actually listening to it, not critiquing it separately. most lyrics sound ridiculous when spoken, and that's why they are sung. get my point?

anyways, here's my list, in the actual order i wrote them:
van morrison, neil young, the anniversary, destroyer, madonna, otis redding, michael jackson, the talking heads, fleetwood mac, the unicorns, against me!, modest mouse, built to spill, saves the day, the get up kids, bon iver, glass candy, tina turner, the smashing pumpkins, elliott smith.

there are several more artists i feel embarrassed to have left out, and i feel compelled to mention that the beatles, specifically george harrison, has played a large part in my life of listening to music.

strange, yet great story sbout george: soon after my dad passed away, i closed my eyes, and skimmed across his record collection, and wanted to be guided to the one i was meant to hear from the batch of them. i stopped on "all things must pass" by george harrison. not surprising, because the beatles were always one of my dads favorites, the title was strangely perfect for the moment, and pictured on the front of this record was george with gnomes, which my dad had always collected. there were so many things that fit this "random" choice that it was hard to put it off as a coincidence.

i have many more stories about each of these artists i have listed, and why they are equally important. but, i won't get in to all of those details. basically, they all represent different points in my life, and the way i felt, and somehow i was able to portray those feelings, as well as understand them better through music.

i recently received a letter in the mail stating that i am nominated for artist trust's arts innovator award for 2010. in order to win, i must submit 20 images of my choosing. this is going to be difficult, i will have to have some friends of mine with a discerning eye help me with this process. if i am chosen, i am granted with $25,000 to put towards project(s) of my choosing. oh, the beautiful images i could create with funds like that.

i've been catching a lot of moments while taking portraits of others where they are obscuring or blocking their face in some way. i like the fact that it keeps the person somewhat anonymous. in the past, these were more candid moments, but i want to start planning out some more portraits without face and eventually i hope to do a show with the series.

i shot these photos of katy and matt yesterday for keep it light. our theme this week was to photograph a couple.

i often walk by this painted wall with fish and other sea creatures, and got the idea for this shoot in mind awhile back. i borrowed my mom's snorkels and pair of fins, and picked up some sassy hawaiian shirts from the thrift store to pull it all together.

the new high light of my week has been meeting with nine local photographers and friends, and coming up with themes to keep us shooting. it's definitely a good time to start this sort of creative group, seeing as how the seattle winter weather can really get a person down on their creativity. here's what i have shot for our assignments thus far.

week one: night shot

week two: everyone came up with a one-sentence phrase or story-idea, and we put them in to a pile, and each drew a random one... the one i got was "you just found out something that changes your life forever".

it just so happens that my dad passed away a year ago on november 15, so i did a self-portrait in his shirt and pair of socks, with a few more of this clothes strewn around the room. i am also wearing the ring of his that my mom gave me after he passed away from a sudden heart attack. that's him on the wall behind me.

i'm not so sure what totality and infinity is about (i've yet to read it), but i've always been intrigued, and a bit intimidated to see what it has to tell me.

i've been thinking about this shot for a long time, and i finally made it a reality with chelsea's help.
the lamps are partly hers, partly mine, and we set everything up in the living room of her house.
she did a great job acting the part of the distressed love-letter-writer.
chelsea said this encompasses what she has actually been doing lately with her letters...
it always makes me happy when my ideas for a shot can also tell a true story of someone else's life at that moment.

sarah joann murphy snapped this one while i was directing camila for a shot.

yesterday we had many local northwest photographers, models, make-up artists, and hair stylists come out to the clise mansion at marymoor park for a day of collaborating to create lovely images. the day went so well, i really think it was one of the smoothest and most successful shoots that i have ever had.
